|Bruce Springsteen's last and only show in Portugal had been in 1993, and the E Street Band had never played the country, so it wasn't a big surprise that 81,000 people (some reports had 90,000) showed up to witness the legend. It also wasn't a big surprise that for the Rock in Rio festival the show was shorter than usual, that it was packed with hits and had no real rarities. As with any crowd that big, there were the diehards, the ones who were expecting Bruce to wear a red bandana around his head, and everything in between. He knew he was playing in a country that was hungry for a concert, and he knew that most people probably wouldn't recognize "Incident on 57th Street" if he'd played it. So what he did was to deliver a fairly regular setlist with an incredible level of energy.|
The band took the stage very late and after a long wait, at 12:15, and started roaring through the setlist. "Spirit in the Night" had Bruce coming up to the crowd to sing the last verse; then the spotlight was on Nils, who delivered a stunning solo at the end of a particularly inspired "Because the Night." After "No Surrender," Bruce quickly came down to pick up (and soon play) two sign requests: "She's the One" and "I'm on Fire."
The rest of the main set pretty standard, though again, delivered with sky-high levels of energy.
